‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is set for a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures in June 2020 as a sequel to the 1986 military drama- ‘Top Gun’, 34 years after its release.

The production of the film began in May 2018, with a budget of US$152 million. An official trailer, the first, was released in July 2019. The second trailer was dropped a couple of days ago, on December 16, 2019 which has got the fanbase talking.

The film stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Monica Barbaro, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.

Titled after Tom Cruise’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the film takes it forward from the first film. One of the finest pilots produced by the Academy, Maverick-who enjoys a reputation, is called back into action as a flight instructor to guide a diverse deputation of pilots. At the briefing, these young fliers are given a background of the accomplished pilot that Maverick is, in the words “What he has to teach you may very well mean the difference between life and death.”

The trailer shows a visibly passionate and thrilled Maverick dominating the screen with some skillful and aggressive maneuvering of the aircraft. There also seems some drama, some friction and a lot of action.

All the flying scenes are real, shot live, making it more authentic and spellbinding. The Director shares in the making of the film that they placed 6 IMAX quality cameras inside the cockpit, so the audience could go through a real experience. The movie has been filmed in IMAX, across San Diego, California, USA.

The Pentagon assisted in the production of the film by allowing them to mount cameras in the cockpits and fly aircraft around secured facilities and restricted airspace usually reserved for Naval Aviators. And in exchange for granting unparalleled access to Navy facilities, ships, and F/A-18 Super Hornets, the film’s producers and Paramount Pictures allowed the top brass in the Defense Department to review the script, supervise production and offered an exclusive screening before the film is made public, including the right to request that any footage captured on Government property be erased if it accidentally revealed any sensitive or classified information.

The trailer is quite exciting, especially the aerial cinematography. For all the Top Gun fans, the long wait seems worth their while. And there is no better deal when it’s Tom Cruise- a thorough professional in the lead. 34 years after the first, Tom Cruise still looks young and gripping as ever and is out to steal more hearts with his compelling and passionate showmanship.

If aviation interests you, or if you are a Tom Cruise fan, Top Gun: Maverick should be a treat for you. Happy waiting!
